THE EFFECT OF COLOR USED ON DIFFERENT SURFACES ON SPACE PERCEPTION

“Whether we want it or not; the color in the space affects us and dominates our selves”. The designed spaces give psychological messages to the user; which creates positive or negative effects on the use of the space. The characteristics related to the color that the space has, cause different psychological perceptions. The differences are due both to the color (type-value-saturation) and to the user (educational status, past experiences, etc.) are caused by connected properties.
Color liking differs from person to person. People color the objects they use or the space they live in according to the color they like, the color that seems beautiful and impressive to one person may seem bad and repulsive to another. This situation is caused by the effect of colors as well as a result of the psychological activities of the person.
The perception of colors is also dependent on the light source; light reduces or increases the efficiency of colors. The colors that people are exposed to in spaces show effects on mental activity, physical performance and psychology-social state.
If the ceiling, floor and walls, which are one of the basic elements of the interior, are painted with the same color type and shade, the perception of form and depth in the space weakens. Along with these, the furniture and accessories in the space should also be considered. During the color study, while choosing the appropriate color for the space, colors relationships with each other should also be taken into account. If the colors that are correct for the space cannot establish a correct relationship with the other colors used together, incompatibility occurs and the desired perception of space cannot be achieved. The colors used in the interiors are also directly related to the light. Because colors show different reflections and effects depending on the type of light. White lights, such as daylight, reflect the true (real) state of colors, while other types of lighting will reflect colors differently from their self-image. Colors affects the user with effects such as large-small, warm-cold, energetic-stationary, moving-calming, etc. in spaces.

Walls:

It wraps and unites the space and also acts as a router. The use of a color with a very warm effect on the walls makes the space seem narrower than it is. Because warm colors are perceived as close. In small-volume spaces, cold colors or pastel shades should be preferred. Because cold colors are both refreshing and make the space look spacious due to the distance effects.

Ceiling:

The use of color also has similar results on the ceilings as on the walls and reflects similar effects on the user. Ceilings serve as a covering of the space, the ceiling is not perceived in places with a high ceiling, but it is felt in places with a low one. In such cases, it is possible to benefit from the distance and proximity effect of colors. In spaces with low ceilings, the flatness of the space will be felt more obvious as the warm colors will make the ceiling feel closer. But instead of that, by choosing a cold color or a light tone color, the feeling that the walls are higher and the ceiling is higher can be aroused.

Floor: It is expected that the floor surface of the space will give a feeling of solidity and confidence, because people want to walk on solid and reliable floors when stepping. For this reason, walking on transparent or hollow surfaces causes fear in people. In order for the floor to have a solid expression and to make the user feel it, it can be covered with a material that is darker in color than the walls.
The colors used in the space; add various differences to the perception of space on the ceiling, walls and floor. Along with these, the texture of the materials used in the space, decorative objects in the space, furniture, etc. also have an effect on color perception and psychological perception in space. The dark and light values of the colors show different effects in warm and cold colors. Just as the effects that surfaces reflect in space differ according to the color type, the value of colors and their warm-cold properties are also effective in this context.
Based on the effects that colors have, each space should be colored according to the function, characteristics and needs it has. For example; it would be correct to take advantage of the distancing effect of cold colors in a narrow space and to paint the space with cold colors. It will be appropriate to achieve results without dividing the floor by choosing a uniform material and neutral color on the floor as much as possible. Because the divisions made on the floor will perceive the space smaller than its actual size.
I wish you to be able to find colors that reflect the spirit of the space in interior design, see you in a brand new content… Have a healthy day.
